Fontanini's heritage reaches back to 1908 in Bagni di Lucca, Italy, where the company was established within the centuries-old figurine-making tradition of the Lucca region. Today, Fontanini describes a legacy spanning more than four generations, with particular emphasis placed on expressive faces, carefully studied poses, movement, and sculptural detail.

The traditional Fontanini production process involves four principal stages: sculpting, mold creation, molding, and painting. Fontanini explains that its polymer material is formulated to capture the details of the original sculpture while providing resistance to scratches and accidental breakage. After molding, the figures are distributed to artisans for decoration, with the painting completed entirely by hand.

Fontanini also states that its Nativity figures are fully made in Italy and individually hand-painted, continuing more than a century of Italian Nativity artistry.
