The Fontanini story began in Bagni di Lucca, Italy, in 1908, when Emanuele Fontanini opened a small artisan workshop after working within the area's longstanding tradition of figurine making. Italy's national archival system documents Emanuele's early work and the establishment of the Fontanini workshop in 1908.

That heritage continues today. Fontanini states that its Nativity tradition has been carried forward through four generations, drawing upon the historic craftsmanship of the Lucca region. The company emphasizes expressive faces, carefully studied poses and details, and figures that are painted by hand, piece by piece. Fontanini also identifies its figures as entirely made in Italy and describes its work as representing more than a century of Nativity artistry.
